Green Building is Better Building!
Most homeowners are interested in incorporating green technology in building a new home when feasible and affordable. But what is “Green Building”? Of late, everyone seems to be claiming to “go green”. This can make it difficult to tell what it really means, especially when it comes to your new home.
Green building means taking into consideration the environment, climate, and available resources during every step of the home building process. It begins with the home design and site location and continues through the construction, and finally, the operation of the home. The goal is to increase the efficient use of resources (energy, water, and materials) while reducing the impact on the environment and human health. This means that a “green” home will include these key elements:

- using the lot in a sustainable manner;

- using recycled or environmentally sustainable materials that are manufactured locally;

- being highly energy efficient through the use of energy-efficient windows, appliances, cooling and heating systems, ventilation systems, and water usage systems; and
-
- having above average indoor environmental air quality.
This concept is not a new one. Our great-grandparents all built their homes to match their local climate and used materials that were available to them locally. With the new technologies becoming available, today’s green homes will be efficient, create a healthier living environment, and be less expensive to maintain.
